GAO Expresses Concern Over FDA's Ability to Meet Its Oversight Reponsibilities
According to a newsletter distributed by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), 20 years ago it reported that it was concerned that the FDA lacked resources to fulfill its mission, which includes oversight of the safety and effectiveness of medical products, including human drugs, biologics, and medical devices, marketed for sale in the U.S. Now some two decades later, although user fees have added revenue to FDA's coffers, its responsibilites have also increased by the growing number of food and medical products entering the markeplace. The GAO still feels that the FDA needs more resources to do the job it needs to do effectively.
The FDA has come under much criticism over the past several years due to tainted food and recalled drugs which apparently slipped through FDA's hands.
Do you think the FDA is still a viable organization for safeguarding food and drugs in this country? What do you think needs to be done to assure U.S. citizens that food and drugs being manufactured and imported into the U.S. are safe?
Also, should vitamins and other supplements be approved by the FDA?

The FDA needs to get back on
The FDA needs to get back on the ball. That's all there is to it. If the people there aren't doing the job, get someone else who will. The thing of the matter is that we as humans depend on their overseeing abilities. They are the ultimate decision makers on the safety and efficacy of drugs. They'll probably say that money is an issue...but can you put a cost to lives saved? I think they definitely need to take over looking at OTC products. Did any of you hear about the Hydroxycut recall??!?!?! That was brought to their attention in 2002 and they just commented on it in 2007. That is ridiculous...and a 19 year old male died because of it.

The FDA is TOO big and
The FDA is TOO big and responsible for TOO many things. Agriculture and Food need to seperate from Drugs. For mass marketed and available drugs the FDA needs to research the process and make it easier and faster. OTC regulation needs to a separate division. Compounding pharmacies need to be left to state Boards of Pharmacy unless they find an area of concern that needs to be addressed on a federal level.
