Anderson, IOM, CAE, president and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), honored pharmacy icon Albert A. Sebok for his commitment to pharmacy and urged students to become an advocate for pharmacy to help advance the profession.

“Effective consultations and wise operational decisions, stitched together over the course of decades, create an impressive career,” said Anderson in his remarks. “But Albert Sebok has accomplished even more than that. His commitment to pharmacy goes far beyond talk of a distinguished career. It also defines what it means to be part of, and to advance, one’s profession.”More »

Citing support for recent enforcement actions against rogue Internet pharmacy websites, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) submitted a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The letter expresses the Association’s concern about these Internet sites, both domestic and foreign, that are engaged in a pattern of illegal activity regarding the prescribing and dispensing of prescription medications.

The letter states, “These illegal, rogue Internet sites take advantage of consumers by luring them into illegal schemes to obtain prescription drugs, often controlled substances, without a prescription or valid patient-prescriber relationship. These Internet sites are not pharmacies.”More »

National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) President and CEO Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE, issued the following statement upon the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approval of the Texas State Plan Amendment (SPA) to increase the pharmacy dispensing fee from $5.14 to $7.50, effective September 1, 2007:

“Following more than three years of collective efforts by NACDS and our state partners, CMS’ approval of the increased dispensing fee is a huge victory for patient care in pharmacies. NACDS emphasizes that there are two types of costs in providing prescriptions: the costs of the medications themselves, and the diverse and substantial costs of dispensing them. Inadequate dispensing fees contribute to pharmacies’ providing medications to Medicaid patients at a loss, which impact their ability to serve the most vulnerable patients. The increase in the dispensing fee in Texas, and its approval by CMS, is vital for patient care.More »

Alexandria, Va. – National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) President and Chief Executive Officer Steven C. Anderson, IOM, CAE issued the following statement today following the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit ruling on September 3, 2009, upholding the reduction of average wholesale prices (AWP):

“For three years, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores and allied organizations have been successful through legal action in preventing reductions to published average wholesale prices (AWP) for prescription drugs. This has prevented subsequent reductions in reimbursement to pharmacies for the patient care they provide, and thus has been a three-year campaign that was worth waging on behalf of pharmacies and the patients they serve.

“We have maintained, and continue to maintain, that pharmacies and patient care should not be harmed by legal proceedings in which pharmacies were not originally involved. That is what occurred when First DataBank and Medi-Span reached a settlement related to the publishing of reduced AWPs.

“The appellate court’s ruling yesterday that now allows the reduction of AWPs does not signify the end of the campaign, but rather shifts the urgency for action to other arenas. The fact remains that reduction of AWPs threatens to cut pharmacy reimbursement for drugs below their costs – an untenable position for any healthcare provider and for any business. Fortunately, some private payers are taking steps to remedy this situation by making appropriate reimbursement adjustments. Likewise, we renew our call today to state Medicaid programs to take the only viable course for patient care and to address the flawed reimbursement that the reduced AWPs will create. For the good of beneficiaries, pharmacy looks forward to working with public payers to address this fragile situation.”More »
